Information for the Classroom or Organizational Meeting:

We are able to provide informed, knowledgeable historical interpreters to visit your classroom or organization meeting to discuss the Tavern and its rich history with your students and members.

Part of the Tavern’s interpretive plan entailed that seven film shorts be produced for use in promoting our heritage and to stream these segments into Southampton and Franklin’s classrooms to assist teachers presenting Civil War topics.  Using local events to present this history enables Mahone’s Tavern & Museum to offer a place-based educational approach to reinforce Civil War themes.  The seven SOL based films which have been completed for presentation include:

2. "Major General William Mahone, CSA, Hero of the Crater"

3. "The Blackwater Line"

4. "Young Billy Mahone"

5. "Railroad Builder, William Mahone"

6. "The Battle of Crumpler’s Bluff/Franklin Depot"

7. " Mahone's Tavern"

These film shorts are presented in the WHRO Television “Here & Then” format, a series produced and aired on WHRO TV (PBS affiliate owned by all of the 18 Hampton Roads School Divisions) Channel 15.  The episodes for this Civil War series will be streamed via Virginia E-Media into Southampton and Franklin classrooms.  An electronic teacher packet with historic background, SOL-relationship, and suggested in-class activities will accompany each segment.

After embarking on this project, it was recognized that additional segments would be required to effectively tell the entire Tavern story, and five additional SOL based stories in the “Here & Then” format are currently under development. They will be incorporated into the program as they are completed, and the topics include:

• Major Gen. George H. Thomas, USA, "The Rock of Chickamauga"
• Statesman and Educator:  Senator William Mahone
• Southampton Soldiers, CSA, Episode II

Furthermore, all of the film shorts will be featured on the Mahone’s Tavern & Museum web site and will be available for use when making presentations about this museum project to area civic organizations and interested groups.

As more historical information concerning the Tavern, the families and individuals who lived there, and their contributions to our history is acquired and funding becomes available, additional film shorts are anticipated.
